Your new wooden floors in Highbury
That great champion of North London, former Poet Laureate, John Betjeman, retained a lifelong affection for this area. As a fan of traditional buildings, John would also have approved of the continuing popularity of wooden floors: a feature holding steady in the face of whim and fashion. Yet natural also means natural wear - and any floor will eventually show its age. Don’t allow yours to carry the burden of marks, digs or more serious damage. Help is but a phone call away. St Saviour’s, Aberdeen Park was one of Betjeman’s favourite Victorian churches. He even wrote a poem about it: the way it ‘bulges over the house tops, polychromatic and high’. And how it was surrounded by ‘solid Italianate houses for the solid commercial mind’. Inside, the church has bricks of various colours with stencilling of flowers and leaves in the chancel. Closed in 1980, it lives on as an Arts centre. Highbury also features in the early part of Betjeman’s 1960 verse autobiography, ‘Summoned by Bells’. This romantic view of a post-Edwardian boyhood vividly evokes the spread of brick terraces, telegraph poles and railway lines... ‘Hushed be thy green hilltop, handsome Highbury.’ |
